We went to St. John's Cathedral and Catacombs. It was very interesting. Because space is limited on the island, the catacombs were used over and over again. Originally there were graves carved out of stone. Usually a large one for the parent and a smaller one for children. When they ran out of room, the would lay the next body right on top of the bones of the last one. About 100 years ago they excavated part of the church and pulled out about 500 people's worth of bones. They then buried them in a mass grave. I asked why they didn't try to catalog them or ID them and they told me that there were so many bones that they would never have been able to sort them out. The photos at the top and bottom are shots of the rocks, notice the space for the head.
