ROME

Rome, Italy

We took a ship excursion package to see Rome. The bus ride from the port of Civitavecchia to Rome was about an hour with a lovely stop at gas station for 20 minutes to use the pay toilets. It was called “A Taste of Rome” and that was really all we could do in the short time we had in Italy. We saw highlights from the Bus of the city including: Trajan’s Arch, Circus Maximus, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. We then had three or four hours to explore the city on our own. We took a taxi from the bus drop off point in the city to the Vatican Museum. It was full of many different wonders of architecture, history, sculpture, and art. This included ancient Greek and Roman statues, ancient Egyptian artifacts (including a real mummy). We also saw the rooms painted by Raphael in the Vatican which were probably the largest works by this Italian painter. The highlight of the Vatican for us was the Sistine Chapel. It was amazing to see Michelangelo’s masterpiece work in person.
